“Toolkit Supports Artists Juggling Work and Caregiving”

Artists lead varied lives, with some enjoying the freedom to work late into the night while others face challenges balancing personal and professional responsibilities. Julia Carr, the artistic director of Neighbourhood Dance Works, highlighted the unseen struggles faced by artists, especially those with caregiving duties. She emphasized the unpredictability and instability in the arts field, which can lead to exhaustion and burnout.

Freelance artists, who lack the benefits and support enjoyed by traditional employees, often find it challenging to juggle work and personal commitments. To address these issues, Neighbourhood Dance Works has launched the Artists Care Toolkit. This resource provides valuable information on community organizations, childcare centers, and health services, aiming to support freelance artists in managing their responsibilities effectively.

Julia Carr, a professional dancer and a mother, understands the demands of balancing work and family life. She highlighted the importance of recognizing one’s needs and seeking support. The Artist Care Toolkit, part of the Balancing Act’s Level UP! initiative, is designed to promote a culture of mutual care and respect in the arts community.

Carr emphasized that the toolkit is a work in progress, with plans to evolve based on community feedback. She encouraged artists to speak up about their needs and not hesitate to seek help. By reimagining artist support and fostering a supportive environment, the toolkit aims to empower artists and caregivers to find a better work-life balance.
