“Comedians Struggle as SiriusXM Overhauls Channels”

Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant drop in her earnings, mirroring the plight of numerous other comedians. SiriusXM has discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which showcased over 800 comics, and replaced it with a channel owned by top-tier comedian Sebastian Maniscalco. This change has left Miele and many other working-class comedians without a vital source of income and visibility, as affluent celebrity comics dominate the airwaves.

Miele expressed how crucial SiriusXM was for her financially, especially during tough times. She highlighted how the royalties from the channel supported many comedians who relied on it to make ends meet. Despite promises from Maniscalco and SiriusXM to provide opportunities for comedians at various career stages, industry advocates from Stand Up for Standup revealed a contrasting reality.

Before the channel transition, Raw Comedy featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties for every performance. However, the revamped channel now only showcases 275 comedians, with the top 50 receiving more than 75% of airtime, including renowned figures like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart. Miele lamented this shift, emphasizing that it now favors a select few wealthy comedians over a diverse range of performers.

The impact extends beyond individual comedians, affecting the broader comedy community. Danish Anwar, a Toronto comedian, disclosed a decrease of 30 to 40% in his monthly royalties from Raw Comedy. Many Canadian comics relying on these royalties to sustain their careers in the U.S. may now face challenges, potentially leading some to return home due to financial constraints.

While high-profile comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf have urged Maniscalco to support emerging talents, he clarified that the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy was made by SiriusXM before his involvement. The company cited underperformance as the reason for the change but reaffirmed its commitment to providing a platform for comedians of all levels on Maniscalco’s Comedy Radio.

As the situation unfolds, comedians like Steph Tolev emphasize the importance of collective action and advocacy in response to industry challenges. Anwar echoes the need for solidarity and improved industry practices to navigate these turbulent times. Despite the setbacks, there is hope for a united effort to address the financial implications faced by comedians in the wake of SiriusXM’s channel restructuring.
