The story, set in the deep, dark woods where a clever mouse outwits predators by inventing a fearsome monster, seemed too dark for children’s literature at the time. Additionally, rhyming tales were not in vogue in 1999, making it a departure from the norm.
Despite her initial reservations, “The Gruffalo” became a surprise hit, leading to subsequent installments like “The Gruffalo’s Child” in 2004 and now “Gruffalo Granny,” likely the final chapter in the series. Donaldson expressed that she doesn’t foresee writing another Gruffalo book in the future.
In the latest book, “Gruffalo Granny,” the original Gruffalo and its offspring prepare a grand feast to welcome the ravenous Gruffalo Granny, known for her insatiable appetite. The recurring theme of the mouse facing perilous situations remains consistent with the first book.
Donaldson shared that creating “Gruffalo Granny” evoked the same passion as crafting “The Gruffalo” years ago, focusing on the story itself rather than the audience’s expectations. Despite this, the release and promotion of “Gruffalo Granny” have exceeded her expectations, with the book reaching record-breaking sales within days of hitting the shelves.
The publisher’s innovative marketing tactics, such as projecting illustrations onto the British Library, contributed to the book’s success. “Gruffalo Granny” swiftly became the top-selling book in the UK for 2026, transcending age groups and genres. The overwhelming response reflects the enduring appeal of Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler’s storytelling prowess.
While Donaldson hinted that her journey with the Gruffalo may conclude with “Gruffalo Granny,” her career as a children’s author remains vibrant. Her upcoming book, “Winnifred Duck,” inspired by the true story of rubber ducks lost at sea, promises to captivate young readers with its intriguing tale of adventure and discovery.
