In a significant shift, the Emmy Awards will be exclusively broadcast on Prime Video from 2027 onwards, marking the end of a 70-year tradition where major networks aired the prestigious ceremony. This strategic six-year partnership between Amazon and the Television Academy was unveiled recently, aligning with the growing trend of streaming services dominating top honors at the Emmys.
Traditionally showcased on one of the four major broadcast networks since 1955, with NBC being the inaugural national broadcaster and hosting last month’s event, the Emmys have rotated annually among ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC in a cycle known as the “Wheel Deal.” The upcoming change to a singular long-term home, commencing with the awards next September, is poised to offer sustained continuity and growth opportunities.
Notably, the Emmys will remain accessible for free, as always, without the need for a Prime Video subscription, as per the Academy’s stipulation to potential partners. This decision mirrors the Oscars’ recent move to YouTube, which was announced in 2025 and takes effect from 2029, in stark contrast to the immediate implementation of the Emmy-Amazon collaboration.
Amid declining viewership trends across awards shows in a fragmented media landscape, the Emmys have faced challenges in attracting audiences compared to the Oscars, Grammys, and Golden Globes, despite honoring critically acclaimed programs. While the Emmys previously drew over 20 million viewers at its peak, current viewership hovers around seven million.
The Television Academy and Amazon are optimistic that Prime Video’s extensive content library, including Emmy-winning shows like “Widow’s Bay” and “The Studio,” accessible through partnerships like Apple TV, could revitalize viewership. Emphasizing the potential to engage a younger audience and promote Emmy-nominated content, the collaboration aims to enhance the show’s appeal and reach over time.
Acknowledging the shift to streaming, Academy Chairman Cris Abrego underscored the primacy of content quality over delivery method, emphasizing the pursuit of excellence regardless of the viewing platform. With Amazon’s track record in live event broadcasting and commitment to hybrid live-on-demand services, Prime Video is poised to offer a dynamic viewing experience for Emmy enthusiasts.
Looking ahead to the future, Abrego hinted at flexibility in potentially adjusting the ceremony’s timing beyond 2027 in consultation with Amazon, reflecting a shared commitment to innovation and audience engagement.
