A man from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, aged 43, is currently standing trial for second-degree murder in a Manitoba court. The accused, Jeremy John Blacksmith, denies involvement in the shooting death of 21-year-old Blaze Tacan, also from the same community. Blacksmith faces additional charges related to weapons offenses. Another individual, aged 17 at the time of the incident, was also apprehended in connection with the crime, but their identity remains protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The tragic event unfolded on August 5, 2023, prompting a response from Virden RCMP following reports of a shooting in Sioux Valley. Tacan was discovered at the scene and rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. During the ongoing trial at the Court of King’s Bench in Brandon, a video statement provided by Blacksmith to investigators a day after the incident was screened.
In the recorded statement, Blacksmith portrayed the victim as aggressive, alleging that Tacan had brandished a firearm tucked in his pants. When pressed by RCMP investigator Mark Walker during questioning, Blacksmith maintained his innocence, claiming he had no involvement in the shooting. Despite the investigator’s skepticism, Blacksmith reiterated that Tacan had shot himself.
Witness testimonies presented during the trial indicated a confrontation between Tacan and the 17-year-old, followed by Blacksmith’s arrival and subsequent gunfire. Details emerged of Blacksmith allegedly shooting Tacan, leading to the discovery of a sawed-off shotgun concealed in a sweater at the scene by responding RCMP officers. Const. Tirrell Lukye, one of the attending officers, testified about the recovery of the weapon and the subsequent forensic analysis linking gunshot residue to both Blacksmith and the youth.
The trial, overseen by Justice Elliot Leven, is scheduled to continue into the following week, with more evidence and testimonies expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
