“Alberta Doctors Push for State of Emergency in Hospitals”

In Alberta, physicians are calling for urgent measures to address the critical situation in hospitals. Dr. Paul Parks, the president-elect of the emergency medicine section at the Alberta Medical Association, is urging the provincial government to declare a state of emergency. Physicians from various hospital divisions across the province support this call due to the escalating crisis leading to patient deaths and poor outcomes in hospital waiting rooms.

Dr. Parks highlighted a recent incident in Edmonton where two patients endured extensive waits in the emergency room offload area, one for nearly 72 hours and the other for over 48 hours. He emphasized the need for a declared crisis with clear leadership to restore safe and timely emergency and hospital care.

The plea for a state of emergency follows the tragic death of a 44-year-old man in Edmonton who allegedly waited eight hours before receiving medical attention in the emergency room. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician in Edmonton, described the current situation as overwhelming, emphasizing the lack of healthcare resources impacting patients’ access to timely care.

The potential declaration of a state of emergency under Alberta’s Public Health Act could facilitate centralized authority and rapid resource mobilization. Stephanie Montesanti, a health policy professor at the University of Alberta, explained that this could enable expedited funding, emergency staffing measures, and enhanced patient care across hospitals.

However, Montesanti cautioned that a state of emergency is a temporary solution and may not address the underlying structural issues within the healthcare system. Despite calls for emergency measures, Alberta’s Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services resisted invoking a state of emergency, stating that existing resources are being maximized and additional emergency measures are unnecessary.

The ministry emphasized ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency care in collaboration with healthcare providers. Measures in place include optimizing emergency room capacity, enhancing patient flow, and plans for additional acute care beds in key hospitals across Alberta.
