Another athlete from Yukon is set to participate in the Olympic Games. Nadia Moser, a 28-year-old resident of Whitehorse, has been selected to represent Biathlon Canada at the Milano Cortina Games in Italy next month. Moser joins Sonjaa Schmidt as the second Yukon woman competing in the Olympics this year.
Expressing her feelings from a training camp in Italy, Moser mentioned that the reality of going to the Olympics hasn’t quite sunk in yet. She recalled a setback from four years ago when she qualified for the Beijing Olympics but had to postpone her participation due to an ankle injury sustained just before the Games.
Moser shared her journey into biathlon, mentioning that she initially found cross-country skiing unexciting until she discovered biathlon at the age of 14, following a friend’s suggestion. She expressed her excitement about participating in the upcoming Olympics alongside another Yukoner, Schmidt.
Bill Curtis, President of Biathlon Yukon, expressed the club’s excitement for Moser’s Olympic debut, highlighting her hard work and dedication. He praised Moser’s work ethic and mentioned her involvement in coaching and mentoring younger athletes. Curtis hopes that Moser’s Olympic appearance will generate more interest in biathlon in Yukon, especially with the upcoming opening of a new $3.8-million facility in Whitehorse.
With the anticipation of increased interest in the sport and the exposure from the Olympics, Curtis predicts a surge in membership for local biathlon programs. The community is looking forward to cheering on Moser and Schmidt as they represent Yukon in the prestigious event.
