Carrie-Anne Moss Joins New Series ‘Yaga’ in Fateful Role

Carrie-Anne Moss was engrossed in a chapter on Baba Yaga from her beloved book when she received an offer to star in the upcoming series, Yaga. The timing felt like fate.

During an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner, Moss revealed her deep connection to the book “Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, which she has owned since 1999. The chapter’s theme resonated with the project she was presented with.

Yaga, a dark mystery-thriller series adapted from a 2019 stage play by Canadian playwright Kat Sandler, is the brainchild behind the project. Noah Reid, known for his role in Schitt’s Creek, takes on the character of private investigator Charlie Rapp, tasked with finding missing heir Henry Park, portrayed by Hudson Williams. Set in the fictional coastal town of Whittock, the storyline mirrors the Slavic legend of Baba Yaga, a mysterious figure with unpredictable powers.

After receiving a letter from Sandler explaining the role of Katherine Hargrove, a professor attracted to younger men, Moss carefully considered the offer. Following thorough review of the script and Sandler’s pitch, Moss accepted the role.

Returning to Victoria for filming has brought Moss back to her roots in British Columbia, where she spent summers as a child on the island with her relatives.

Growing up in Burnaby and later residing in Granville Island during high school, Moss’s passion for acting was ignited by watching television shows that evoked strong emotions within her. Acting was not merely a career choice for Moss but a profound calling that she embraced wholeheartedly.

Moss’s journey led her from Vancouver to Toronto and eventually to Europe, landing her first significant role on the TV series Dark Justice. Despite the challenges she faced upon moving to Los Angeles, Moss persevered, driven by her genuine passion for acting.

Her breakthrough came in 1997 when she auditioned for the role of Trinity in The Matrix on her 30th birthday. The experience taught her valuable lessons about resilience and trusting the journey, especially during times of rejection.

Reflecting on her iconic role in The Matrix, Moss admitted to being moved to tears upon seeing the finished film for the first time. The success of the movie catapulted her to international fame, leading to further roles in notable films and a return to The Matrix franchise in 2021.

While Moss took breaks from acting to focus on raising her children, she remains deeply connected to her creative pursuits. Concerned about the impact of artificial intelligence on human creativity, Moss advocates for preserving authentic storytelling and empathetic connections in an increasingly digital age.

Currently residing in New Hampshire for a quieter lifestyle, Moss continues to contemplate the future of her craft and the evolving role of human creativity in the face of technological advancements. She remains focused on the present, embracing new opportunities that come her way, including her involvement in the series that resonated with her at a pivotal moment in her life.
