“Parking Shortage Causes Stress at Nova Scotia Hospital”

A revamp initiative at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, has resulted in a parking shortage, causing stress and missed appointments for some patients and visitors. The hospital is expanding by 30%, introducing new facilities like an MRI, dialysis unit, and upgraded emergency department. The construction is anticipated to finish this summer, but it has posed difficulties for individuals trying to access the hospital.

Katie Lohnes, who frequently accompanies her father to the hospital, shared their struggle of finding parking due to the closure of a section of the parking lot. Despite the province offering free parking at healthcare facilities, the ongoing construction exacerbates the situation. Nova Scotia Health acknowledged the parking issue at South Shore Regional, mentioning the temporary closure of 55 parking spaces and the addition of a few more spots to alleviate the problem.

Families like Natasha White’s have also faced challenges with parking, resulting in missed appointments. While the health authority does not track missed appointments related to parking, they encourage patients to call if they anticipate being late or need to cancel. To mitigate the parking woes, Nova Scotia Health advises allocating extra time for parking and suggests dropping off patients for appointments whenever possible.

Lohnes expressed the need for paid parking to deter misuse of the free service by non-hospital visitors. The situation remains complex for many, as dropping off patients isn’t always feasible, especially when they require assistance. As the hospital continues its redevelopment, patients and visitors are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time when visiting the facility.
