Alexander Stubb, dubbed as Europe’s “Trump whisperer” in some circles, clarified that this characterization is not entirely accurate, according to the Finnish president. Stubb mentioned that President Trump is known for having strong opinions, with more direct communication rather than whispering. In a recent interview with CBC News chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton, Stubb shared insights about his interactions with the U.S. president.
During his visit to Ottawa for official meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Stubb highlighted the importance of engagement in diplomacy, even when disagreements arise. Despite not fully endorsing the “whisperer” label, Stubb seems to have a close relationship with Trump, as evidenced by their long-standing friendship and frequent communication.
The discussions between Stubb and Trump have included topics such as Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Finland, having the longest border with Russia among NATO and EU members, joined NATO in 2023 following the invasion of Ukraine. Stubb has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine’s defense efforts, noting the country’s advancements in drone warfare capabilities, leading to a more favorable position compared to previous years.
Recent reports indicate that Ukrainian forces have made significant strides in combatting Russian aggression, with a notable increase in territorial gains and successful drone defenses. Stubb emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine’s military prowess and urged for a strategic shift in aiding the country’s defense.
With Ukraine showcasing its ability to counter Iranian-made drones and the escalating conflict dynamics, Stubb highlighted the significance of international recognition for Ukraine’s efforts. The U.S., after initial hesitations, acknowledged the value of Ukrainian assistance in drone defense, albeit without committing to Ukraine’s NATO membership aspirations.
Despite differing views on Ukraine’s NATO membership, Stubb reiterated the persistent threat posed by Russia to NATO allies. He emphasized Ukraine’s pivotal role in ensuring regional security and stability amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
