Mystikal, the Grammy-nominated rapper from the early 2000s, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a woman at his Louisiana residence in 2022. Born Michael Lawrence Tyler, Mystikal admitted to third-degree rape in March, facing a maximum of 20 years in prison as part of his plea agreement. The charge was reduced from first-degree rape, which carries a life sentence.
Just before his scheduled sentencing, Mystikal tried to retract his guilty plea, claiming he had not fully understood the implications. The victim, who spoke in court, urged the judge to impose the maximum penalty, recounting how Mystikal had physically assaulted and sexually assaulted her at his Prairieville home, located approximately 29 kilometers from Baton Rouge.
Reportedly, Mystikal responded to the victim’s statement in court by acknowledging that if he had committed the actions described, he deserved the harshest punishment. As of now, Mystikal remains in custody at the Ascension Parish Jail without bond since his arrest in 2022.
Initially gaining fame in the 1990s, Mystikal is best known for his 2000 hit song “Shake Ya A**,” which earned him a Grammy nomination for best rap solo performance. In 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery, resulting in a six-year prison sentence. That same year, he received Grammy nominations for his album “Tarantula” and the single “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall).”
