A four-year-old Doberman named Penny, hailing from the Greater Toronto Area, emerged victorious at the 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York. Penny outshined more than 2,500 dogs and 200 breeds to claim the prestigious title, surpassing six other finalists at Madison Square Garden.
According to Theresa Connors-Chan, Penny’s co-owner and breeder, winning this competition is akin to clinching the Super Bowl or the Stanley Cup in the world of purebred dogs. Overwhelmed with joy, Connors-Chan expressed that she cried tears of happiness for about thirty minutes.
Penny now joins the ranks of only five Dobermans in the history of the event to secure the best-in-show accolade, the most sought-after prize at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Donald G. Sturz, the president of the Westminster Kennel Club, commended Penny’s remarkable qualities, citing her character, confidence, and overall presence.
Each dog in the competition is evaluated based on how closely it adheres to the breed’s standard. The champion receives a lavish lunch, trophy, ribbons, and the honor of winning the landmark 150th edition of the Westminster show this year.
While Westminster victories typically favor dogs with professional handlers or seasoned owners, merely qualifying for this exclusive champions-only event is considered a significant achievement in itself. Connors-Chan anticipates a surge in interest in the Doberman breed following Penny’s triumph, as she and her husband have been breeding dogs in Durham Region for nearly 14 years.
Describing Penny as the pinnacle of their breeding efforts, Connors-Chan praised Dobermans for their intelligence, humorously remarking that they can sometimes outsmart their human companions. With Penny having amassed 66 all-breed best-in-show wins in the U.S., she is now set to retire after two years of competition with her handler.
Looking ahead, the plan is to enroll Penny in the St. John Ambulance therapy dog program and potentially breed her to have puppies. Connors-Chan expressed that it is time for Penny to retire and return home, signifying a new chapter in the beloved Doberman’s life.
