In a community on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, residents whether connected to a well or the town’s water reservoir are facing challenges that the mayor assures are being tackled. Torbay residents linked to North Pond, the primary water source, have experienced intermittent water advisories since summer, urging conservation and adherence to boil water alerts. Resident Nikki Grouchy highlighted persistent issues with poor water quality, describing it as unpleasant and discolored. Due to her distrust, she refrains from using the water even for her cat.
Some residents with well water are concerned about potential contamination with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In response, Mayor Craig Scott mentioned plans to transform Great Pond into a new municipal water source, aiming to expand service to more homes. Federal funding of $26.8 million has been allocated for this development, with a remaining $9 million to be covered by the town.
The need for a new water source arose after PFAS contamination affected the previous supply at South Pond. While a timeline for the project is pending, efforts are underway to initiate a request for proposals. Additionally, plans include installing a water treatment plant at North Pond to enhance water quality.
Amidst concerns over water quality, a class-action lawsuit has been filed against the federal government alleging PFAS contamination in well water from firefighting foam used at St. John’s International Airport. The case represents around 700 households, impacting approximately 2,000 to 2,500 individuals. Mayor Scott acknowledged the increasing reports of PFAS contamination beyond the initial areas of concern.
Resident Dalton Tapper emphasized that water quality issues are hindering community growth and development, prompting residents to opt for bottled water due to taste and safety concerns. The uncertainty surrounding water quality raises questions about property values and potential new residents moving to Torbay.
