The Finnish women’s hockey team faced an unexpected setback when several athletes contracted norovirus on Tuesday night. The situation escalated by Wednesday evening, prompting a discussion among officials from Finland, Canada, the International Olympic Committee, International Ice Hockey Federation, and Milano Cortina 2026 organizers.
Despite concerns and player shortages due to illness, the Finns did not consider forfeiting their initial game against Canada. Instead, the Canadians agreed to reschedule the match to February 12 for safety reasons. Thirteen Finnish team members were either sick or in quarantine, leaving only 10 players fit to compete.
In a joint statement, the organizations involved emphasized that the decision prioritized the health and well-being of all participants. Canadian GM Gina Kingsbury expressed empathy for the Finnish team’s predicament, recognizing the gravity of the situation in a sport where small margins matter.
Canada adjusted its tournament schedule, now commencing against Switzerland on Saturday.
