An increasing number of Ontario residents who traditionally spend their winters in the U.S. have opted to purchase property in Mexico. This change in preference is attributed to concerns over the political climate in the United States under President Donald Trump. John Kawiuk and Sharron MacKay, residents of Mississauga, shared their unease with CBC Toronto, explaining how they felt unwelcome and insecure during their winter stays in Florida. Consequently, they decided to shift their plans and invest in a property in Campeche, Mexico, last year.
Similarly, George and Tracy McCabe from Niagara Falls, Ontario, cited political reasons for their decision to leave their Florida residence of 12 years and relocate to Campeche in 2022. They expressed anticipation of the outcome of the presidential administration and felt the need to make a move.
The Canadian Snowbird Association indicates that approximately one million Canadians, including around three percent of Ontario residents aged over 65, head south for the winter annually. Contrary to previous years, a recent survey by Snowbird Advisor revealed a decrease in the intention of respondents to winter in the U.S., dropping from 82 percent last year to 70 percent this year. This shift is in line with the overall decline in Canadian travel to the U.S., which was reported to have fallen by 24 percent last November compared to the previous year according to Statistics Canada.
Furthermore, the survey by Snowbird Advisor highlighted a significant increase in Canadian snowbirds opting for international destinations, with the percentage rising from 12 percent last year to 23 percent this year. Individuals like Janice DaSilva-Pearcy and Don Pearcy from Niagara-on-the-Lake expressed contentment with their decision to relocate to Mexico in 2022, emphasizing their love for the culture and the affordability of living there.
Affordability was a key factor for many snowbirds in choosing Mexico over the U.S., with some noting the high cost of living in the United States as a significant motivator for their decision. They highlighted the lower costs of various essential items in Mexico, making it a more attractive option for retirement living.
Moreover, safety concerns also played a role in the decision-making process, with many snowbirds expressing a sense of security in Mexico compared to their experiences in Florida. The perception of safety, coupled with cultural immersion and lower living expenses, has contributed to an increasing trend of Ontario residents choosing Mexico as their winter destination.
