A new initiative at Brandon’s downtown Westman Regional Library is providing social services within one of the city’s bustling public spaces to assist vulnerable individuals in accessing necessary support. Destiny Thompson, a case manager with Ask Auntie, a program by Brandon Friendship Centre aiding Indigenous and vulnerable communities, has been stationed at the library since November, using her office in the foyer for informal interactions like engaging people in activities and linking them with resources.
Thompson’s presence from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, aims to cater to individuals seeking assistance, especially those considered vulnerable. With the closure of the Blue Door in spring 2025 due to increased violence, there has been a rise in individuals utilizing the library as a daytime refuge.
This outreach model in Brandon mirrors similar programs in Canada, such as Winnipeg’s revamped support hub and a Toronto Public Library initiative that recently expanded. Erika Martin, the Western Manitoba Regional Library director, notes the increasing daytime library visitors over the past five years, emphasizing the importance of providing a warm and secure community space.
The partnership with Ask Auntie signifies a shift towards support rather than just security measures in the library, fostering a more compassionate environment. The collaboration aligns with broader efforts to enhance Brandon’s downtown area through partnerships with various organizations, aiming to build upon existing community strengths.
Travis Norris, a regular visitor at the library, commends Thompson for her caring and respectful approach, highlighting the need for more supportive figures like her. Trust and consistency in Thompson’s presence have proven pivotal in de-escalating potential conflicts and facilitating connections to vital resources for those in need.
