Members of Ottawa’s Ukrainian community gathered on a chilly Sunday to mark the end of the Christmas season and stand in solidarity with their fellow Ukrainians enduring difficult circumstances in their homeland. The group paraded along Sparks Street to Parliament Hill, adorned with vibrant decorations and singing traditional Ukrainian Christmas carols.
Maryna Shum, who came to Canada in April 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, emphasized the importance of sharing their beautiful traditions despite Christmas Day passing. The festive season in Ukrainian culture extends beyond Christmas Day, with the march symbolizing its conclusion this year, resonating with the ongoing challenges faced by those in Ukraine.
Shum highlighted the severe conditions back in Ukraine, where people lack essential utilities like heating and electricity, making daily life incredibly challenging. Nonetheless, she emphasized the unity and resilience of Ukrainians abroad, expressing unwavering support for their heritage and people regardless of the distance.
The gathering featured participants singing traditional carols, waving festive decorations, masks, and star-topped staffs. Organizers aimed to replicate the Ukrainian Christmas celebration customs, where groups move from house to house performing and singing. The march through downtown Ottawa aimed to raise awareness of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, reminding spectators of the war’s impact.
Khrystyna Serbinova shared her sentiment of missing the joyous traditions of the winter holidays, expressing the emotional complexity of celebrating while knowing the struggles faced by her fellow Ukrainians. Despite the challenges, Serbinova emphasized the unity and togetherness of the Ukrainian community, highlighting the enduring bond that transcends distance and adversity.
