Canadian military personnel and civilians, part of the NATO contingent in Iraq, have been evacuated due to escalating tensions in the region following retaliatory actions by Iran and other Gulf nations amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.
According to Defence Minister David McGuinty, Canadian Armed Forces members and civilians serving in Iraq under NATO’s advisory mission have been safely relocated to a secure area. McGuinty emphasized the importance of upholding international law and principles of global peace and security during these turbulent times.
NATO officially announced the withdrawal of its military trainers from Iraq, relocating them to Europe. The non-combat mission, initiated in 2018, focused on training and advising Iraqi forces to combat terrorism and enhance stability in the country. The mission involved personnel from various NATO allies, including Austria and Australia.
U.S. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, expressed gratitude to Iraq and all assisting allies for the successful relocation of NATO personnel. The mission will now operate from Joint Force Command Naples, ensuring continuity in NATO’s efforts to promote peace and stability worldwide.
Despite recent criticism for lack of transparency, with reports of an Iranian missile strike on a Kuwaiti airbase housing Canadian Armed Forces members, the Canadian government defended its stance on operational security. Conservative defence critic James Bezan condemned the government’s secrecy regarding Canada’s role in the conflict, while the Department of National Defence cited operational security as the reason for non-disclosure of military facility assessments. Canada reaffirmed its commitment to international peace and collaboration with NATO allies in maintaining global stability.
