Canadian tennis player Félix Auger-Aliassime secured a victory at the Dubai Championships by defeating China’s Zhang Zhizhen 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the first round. Despite missing multiple match points, Auger-Aliassime managed to close out the match in a tiebreaker, winning two of the last three points to secure the win.
Auger-Aliassime, the tournament’s top seed, is set to face French qualifier Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the next round. Reflecting on the missed opportunities during the match, Auger-Aliassime expressed his frustration but remained focused on his performance. He highlighted the mental challenge of holding match points and staying composed under pressure.
During the match, Auger-Aliassime showcased a strong performance, serving 11 aces with only three double faults and converting on two of his 11 break-point opportunities. He also maintained an impressive 78% first-serve points won. In comparison, Zhang delivered 10 aces with one double fault but struggled to capitalize on his break-point chances, failing to convert all four opportunities.
Ranked eighth in the world, Auger-Aliassime has been in excellent form, winning nine of his last ten matches. Following his victory in Montpellier, where he claimed his ninth ATP title, Auger-Aliassime is determined to continue his success as he prepares to face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the upcoming round.
