Alberta’s Kevin Koe secured a 6-4 victory against Saskatchewan’s Mike McEwen at the Brier in St. John’s, improving his record to 2-0. McEwen initially led 3-2 after the fifth end and maintained a 4-3 advantage by the eighth. However, Koe’s team managed to score three crucial points in the final 10th end, clinching the win in the morning session of the national men’s curling championship.
In other matches, New Brunswick’s James Grattan (1-1) defeated Northern Ontario’s Sandy MacEwan (1-1) with a score of 8-6, while Manitoba’s Braden Calvert (1-1) triumphed over Northwest Territories’ Jamie Koe (0-2) with a commanding 12-5 victory. Yukon’s Thomas Scoffin (1-1) also emerged victorious with a 7-4 win over B.C.’s Cody Tanaka.
During the afternoon session, Canada’s Brad Jacobs secured an impressive 11-2 win against Nunavut’s Derek Samagalski, while Newfoundland and Labrador’s Brad Gushue secured an 8-4 victory over Ontario’s Jayden King. Nathan Young’s N.L. team narrowly won 9-8 against Prince Edward Island’s Tyler Smith, and Saskatchewan’s Kelly Knapp defeated Nova Scotia’s Kendal Thompson 8-5.
The competition will continue until March 8 at Mary Brown’s Centre.
