Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, last weekend to enjoy live performances by their favorite artists at a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence.
The Daisy Chain Fields charity festival, organized by pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, mirrored the pioneering Lilith Fair from the 1990s with an all-female lineup. The festival showcased a mix of emerging and established artists, including Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, and Garbage.
Before the festival kicked off, Rodrigo announced that they had successfully raised $10 million for the event’s 10 non-profit partners like Planned Parenthood and the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. This amount was later matched by Melinda French Gates, doubling the total funds raised to $20 million.
Rodrigo unveiled the festival back in June, highlighting that performers volunteered their talents, and all proceeds were directed to organizations supporting women and girls. The event was graced by special appearances from music legends like Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette, and Sarah McLachlan.
The festival’s name, “Daisy Chain,” symbolized unity and strength in coming together. Against the backdrop of ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the U.S., Rodrigo and fellow artists used their platform to advocate for gender equality and women’s rights.
In addition to the musical performances, attendees had the opportunity to engage with various art installations, including a LEGO mural and a display chronicling the Riot Grrrl movement. Notable activist groups like Guerrilla Girls also contributed, sparking conversations on important societal issues.
Despite the scorching temperatures, festival-goers like Chase Martinez praised Daisy Chain Fields as a transformative experience. The philanthropy village within the festival grounds provided a unique opportunity for attendees to learn about and support the charitable causes championed by the event.
