Search teams have located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber and the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering group that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks back, as confirmed by a mountaineering official and local authorities. The discovery of Geis’s remains was made by a team of local volunteers, disclosed Irfan Arshad Khan, the President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to ascend an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Residing in San Antonio, Texas, the 39-year-old Geis had announced on social media earlier this year her decision to shut down her Pilates studio to embark on “a giant leap of faith into the unknown to see where life goes. I have a sneaking suspicion there will be lots of helmets, harnesses and crampons involved.” In a recent statement, her family remembered her as “a bright light who was loved deeply by her family and friends.”
The search operation initiated on July 31 following the tragic avalanche that engulfed the team led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja on Broad Peak has now concluded with Geis’s recovery. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier of Nepali descent, gained fame by conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record 189 days in 2019, a feat documented in the Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Notably, his record was surpassed in 2023.
Incidents such as avalanches, falling ice and rock, severe altitudes, and swiftly changing weather conditions contribute to the common occurrence of accidents during mountain-climbing expeditions in northern Pakistan.
