“Hydro-Québec Substation Failure Causes Major Montreal Outages”

Thousands of Montreal residents faced power outages over the weekend due to equipment failure at a Hydro-Québec substation targeted for replacement since 2018. The Hampstead substation, a known weak link in the local grid, suffered a breaker failure, a complex issue that took time to fix despite the use of generators for swift restoration.

François Bouffard, an engineering professor at McGill University, highlighted the intricate nature of repairing a failed breaker, especially for equipment in service for over fifty years. The outage affected over 20,000 customers in Montreal, Montreal West, and Côte Saint-Luc, with some seeking refuge at warming centers.

Hydro-Québec’s plan to rebuild the aging station, originally in service since 1955, has faced delays, with completion not expected until 2029. Upgrades to power lines servicing Côte Saint-Luc are set for completion by 2031, aiming to meet rising demand by converting the facility to 315 kilovolts.

The evolving suburban landscape around the substation has added complexity to the upgrade process, necessitating extensive consultations for the installation of larger transmission lines. Despite pandemic-related delays, Hydro-Québec is committed to enhancing power reliability for the future.

Residents impacted by the outage expressed frustration, emphasizing the need for better communication and preparedness from Hydro-Québec. Efforts to expedite power restoration and implement mitigation measures were emphasized by local officials to prevent similar incidents in the future.
