“Resilience Retreat Supports First Responders’ Mental Health”

After starting his career as a firefighter, Alex Milonas discovered a lack of training on mental health injuries, despite being prepared for physical risks. Milonas, now 34, faced sleep disturbances and stress management challenges after five years on the job, noting the stigma around discussing mental health issues.

River Valley Resilience Retreat’s visit to the fire hall provided Milonas with the support he needed to open up about his struggles. This non-profit organization offers peer support to public safety workers dealing with operational stress injuries and PTSD.

Peer support group sessions at the retreat facilitate sharing experiences and exploring treatment options. Co-founder Jeff Reeder highlighted the increasing demand for mental health services among first responders over the past two decades due to rising operational stress cases.

Recognizing the importance of early intervention, Reeder emphasized the need for first responders to be vigilant about signs of operational stress. Health Canada data indicates a significantly higher prevalence of PTSD among first responders compared to the general population.

River Valley Resilience Retreat witnessed a steady increase in client interactions over the years, with expectations of exceeding 2,800 interactions in 2025. Situated on a 25-acre property south of Prince Albert, the retreat offers respite in five cabins for individuals in need of support during stressful or traumatic times.

Former police officer Warren Nagy shared his positive experience with peer counseling in managing his recurring PTSD symptoms. Emphasizing the benefits of various treatments, Nagy highlighted improvements in sleep and attention span after using a therapy chair.

RVRR conducts in-person peer support group meetings in multiple locations and welcomes first responders to reach out through their website for assistance.

The organization’s commitment to providing a safe environment for individuals experiencing stress or trauma underscores its mission to support those in need within the public safety sector and beyond.
