An ex-senior advisor to Dr. Anthony Fauci has been charged with allegedly plotting to conceal his communications related to COVID-19 research during the pandemic, as per the U.S. Justice Department announcement on Tuesday. Dr. David Morens, aged 78, is accused of deliberately using his personal email account to bypass public records regulations while working at the National Institutes of Health. The Justice Department claims that he hid or destroyed records of discussions concerning COVID-19 research grants, including an initiative to revive a contentious coronavirus grant.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on Tuesday, “These accusations signify a severe breach of trust at a critical time when the public needed it the most — during the peak of a global pandemic. Government officials have a crucial responsibility to offer honest, well-founded facts and guidance in the interest of the public good, rather than furthering personal or ideological motives.”
Morens is facing charges of conspiring against the United States; tampering, modifying, or falsifying records in federal investigations; hiding, removing, or damaging records; and aiding and abetting, according to a news release from the Justice Department. If found guilty, he could potentially receive a lengthy prison sentence. Morens’ legal representative declined to provide any comments.
Indictment Echoes Long-Held Belief
The indictment echoes the persistent belief among Republicans that crucial information regarding COVID-19 was concealed by the federal government as the pandemic evolved. Despite numerous inquiries, the origins of COVID-19 remain unproven. There is uncertainty among scientists as to whether the virus originated from an animal, like many others, or if it resulted from a laboratory incident. A U.S. intelligence report released in 2023 stated that there is insufficient evidence to support either hypothesis.
Blanche suggested that Morens’ alleged actions were part of a scheme to “quash alternative theories” about the origins of COVID-19.
The Justice Department further accused Morens of maintaining an improper association with a collaborator, which included reportedly accepting a wine gift and discussing COVID-19 research and potential publications in a renowned medical journal.
The indictment follows an investigation by House Republicans into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, scrutinizing Morens’ email communications and accusing him of purposely concealing records. During congressional testimony, Morens refuted claims of evading federal transparency laws by utilizing his personal email.
