Carlos Alcaraz will not be participating in the upcoming French Open as he is recovering from an injury to his right wrist. The tennis star made an announcement on Friday that he would also be skipping the Italian Open in Rome, a tournament he had won last year. Alcaraz, who is currently ranked No. 2, sustained the injury during a match at the Barcelona Open earlier this month, forcing him to withdraw the following day. His absence was noticeable at the Madrid Open this week, where he was seen with his wrist immobilized at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, where he was named the world sportsman of the year.
After undergoing further medical examinations on Friday, Alcaraz confirmed that he would not be competing at Roland Garros. In a statement, he expressed his disappointment but emphasized the importance of being cautious and prioritizing his recovery. Alcaraz, who had a remarkable start to the year by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, has had mixed results since then. Despite winning the title in Doha in February, he fell short in the Monte Carlo final against Jannik Sinner and lost the No. 1 ranking to the Italian player.
Sinner, who defeated Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo final, expressed his hopes for Alcaraz’s swift return to the court. He emphasized the significance of Alcaraz’s presence in the sport and wished for his full recovery before making a competitive comeback, possibly targeting the upcoming Wimbledon tournament in June.
In another development, Victoria Mboko from Burlington, Ont., and Gabriel Diallo from Montreal faced disappointing exits from the Madrid Open after suffering losses in the second round. Mboko was defeated by Caty McNally, while Diallo withdrew from his match due to injury. Mboko, who struggled on serve throughout the match, faced a tough challenge against McNally, managing only one break point. Diallo’s match ended prematurely after he called for a medical timeout and retired due to the injury.
Mboko, who recently recovered from dental surgery, had been performing well in previous tournaments on hardcourt surfaces. Diallo, a seeded player at the event, faced a setback due to his injury, leading to his withdrawal during the match against Moller. Both Mboko and Diallo had received byes in the first round as seeded players at the Madrid Open.
The Italian Open is scheduled to begin on May 5, followed by the French Open on May 18.
