A duo of African long-distance runners achieved a remarkable feat in sports by breaking the once-unthinkable two-hour barrier in the 42.2-kilometer marathon. Sabastian Sawe from Kenya emerged victorious in the London Marathon, clocking in at 1 hour 59 minutes 30 seconds, surpassing the previous men’s world record by an impressive 65 seconds. Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia, running his debut marathon, finished closely behind with a time of 1:59.41.
Reflecting on his achievement, Sawe humbly stated, “What comes today is not for me alone but for all of us here in London.” Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda secured the third position with a time of 2:00.28, outperforming the previous world record held by Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya. Notably, all three runners broke Kiptum’s three-year-old record, marking a historic moment in marathon history.
The marathon’s distance has a mythical origin, mirroring the run of a Greek soldier from Marathon to Athens to announce a victory in ancient times. The London Marathon provided an ideal setting for the runners, with a flat course and favorable weather conditions. Sawe demonstrated a strong finish, covering the second half of the race in 59:01 and pulling ahead with Kejelcha after the 30 km mark.
Acknowledging the support from cheering fans lining the route, Sawe expressed gratitude, emphasizing how their encouragement boosted his spirits during the race. The event drew massive crowds in London, witnessing one of the most extraordinary performances in the sport of running, challenging the limits of human speed.
The quest to break the two-hour barrier in the marathon has been a longstanding goal for elite runners and sports enthusiasts. While Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya unofficially achieved this feat in 2019, Sawe’s recent record-breaking run has now set a new standard in marathon running. The evolution of marathon records over the years reflects advancements in training methods, nutrition, and footwear technology.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa set a new record, winning in 2:15:41 and defending her title in the fastest-ever time in a women’s-only marathon. The marathon event also saw impressive performances from other competitors, underlining the growing competitiveness and achievements in long-distance running.
The London Marathon not only showcased exceptional athletic prowess but also highlighted the ongoing pursuit of breaking boundaries and setting new benchmarks in the world of sports.
