Since December 14, 2025, Jake Reiner has felt time passing both slowly and quickly. “It’s been eight months, but it feels like both eight years and eight minutes simultaneously,” he shared during his first interview with KABC-TV’s Mark Cota-Robles following the tragic discovery of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who were found fatally stabbed in their Los Angeles residence on that Sunday afternoon. Shortly after, their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was arrested and later charged with their murder.
Jake expressed the constant reminder of his harsh reality each morning, stating, “Every moment I wake up, I’m living through this reality every single day.”
During the interview released on Thursday, he recounted receiving a call from his sister Romy on the fateful day, informing him of their father’s demise and their mother’s absence. “Romy told me about our dad and then mentioned she couldn’t locate mom,” Jake shared with Cota-Robles during the hour-long conversation. “I was immediately in shock.”
Nick was formally charged on July 20 with two counts of first-degree murder relating to the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner, a renowned Hollywood figure as a filmmaker, actor, and political activist, and Michele Reiner, a photographer and producer. He entered a plea of not guilty. The indictment, disclosed on August 12 by the LA County grand jury, alleged that Nick, who had a well-documented history of mental health challenges and addiction battles, had premeditated the attack on his parents.
In 2016, Rob and Nick collaborated on a film titled Being Charlie, inspired by Nick’s struggles with addiction. The movie portrays the tale of a rebellious teenage son of an actor-turned-politician father, engulfed in drug addiction and love with another addict.
Rob had previously mentioned that the film was his most personal project, bringing him closer to his son during filming.
In the recent interview, Jake reaffirmed his earlier sentiment of losing half of his family, including Nick, following the tragedy. Expressing his complex emotions towards his brother, he stated, “I’ll never comprehend why this happened.” Jake described his feelings of anger and helplessness, emphasizing the injustice and lack of control he felt in the situation, highlighting the most frustrating aspects of the ordeal.
