Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are exhibiting a concerning red coloration and dying off following the unprecedented drought last summer, sparking worries about the fate of these iconic provincial trees. Prof. Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been actively engaging with woodlot owners and personally witnessing the detrimental effects as the vibrant evergreens, commonly used as Christmas trees, transition to a red, desiccated state and ultimately perish.
According to Taylor, the observed trend aligns with the aftermath of previous hot and arid summers, emphasizing the detrimental impact of warm, dry conditions on the growth capacity of balsam fir trees. His extensive research on climate change’s influence on New Brunswick’s forests has revealed similar instances of balsam fir decline following excessively hot and dry weather in 1986 and 2018.
The researcher elucidates that during drought conditions, the trees prematurely halt the photosynthesis process, impeding their growth potential. This interruption in energy production hinders essential metabolic functions and the synthesis of defense compounds, leaving the trees vulnerable to stressors like insects or pathogens, thereby escalating the likelihood of die-offs.
Moreover, balsam fir trees’ shallow root systems pose a challenge in accessing water during dry periods, exacerbating their susceptibility to environmental stressors. The impact of the recent drought is vividly illustrated by Peter McKeil, who has witnessed a gradual reddening of his woodlot’s balsam firs, indicating ongoing tree mortality. McKeil has already lost around 100 trees and is adapting his harvesting practices to salvage remaining fir trees before further losses occur.
Expressing concern over the future of balsam firs in the region, McKeil foresees a grim fate for the species in southern New Brunswick due to worsening climate conditions.
