A tortoise named Molly, originally from the Sahara desert, was discovered wandering slowly at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, far from her natural habitat. The staff at the marsh were surprised to find the 36-kilogram African spurred tortoise in their midst, thinking initially that it was a common snapping turtle native to Manitoba.
After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, the staff embarked on a search and found Molly, who had strayed 20 kilometers from home. They provided her with care, including feeding her cucumbers and flower petals, until her rightful owners were located and she was reunited with them.
Molly’s family had raised her for 15 years, and it was believed she had escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations. Despite her escape and journey to the marsh, the exact circumstances of how Molly ended up there remain a mystery, with theories suggesting a well-meaning individual may have relocated her, unaware of the risks to her in a wetland environment.
