RCMP investigators specializing in national security have now joined the probe into an alleged bomb-making plot involving four individuals linked to Western University. The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) of the RCMP is extending support to the local police in London, Ont., as per a Mountie spokesperson, albeit with limited details provided.
The accused, comprising three men and one woman who are current or former Western students, are facing multiple charges, including the possession of chemicals capable of being used for explosives and the production of a firearm. The charges stemmed from a trespassing inquiry on the university campus that led authorities to a residence located just west of the campus at 212 Chesham Pl., where the said chemicals were discovered last week.
The involvement of INSET in the investigation remains unclear at this point. Counterterrorism experts caution against premature speculation regarding the motives of the accused. Phil Gurski, a former CSIS analyst, notes that while certain elements of the case hint at espionage, the individuals involved appear young and less experienced than typical spies.
The creation of a firearm in this context is seen as an unusual aspect of the case, deviating from organized crime patterns, according to Francis Langlois, a firearms expert at the University of Quebec. The accused individuals, who are all in their twenties, are currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
