Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw revealed on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct an upcoming television series based on the Harry Potter franchise, citing opposition to supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a screenshot of a text conversation on Instagram, explicitly stating her refusal to work on the HBO Harry Potter TV show.
In her post, Pankiw emphasized the ease of rejecting funding for transphobia and clarified that the opportunity was for directing, not acting. Known for directing episodes of Black Mirror, the full first season of Feel Good, and the film I Used to be Funny, Pankiw’s decision showcases her stance against discriminatory beliefs.
The exchange, dated April 21, did not disclose the recipient of Pankiw’s message. The new series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled for release on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, and will stream on Crave in Canada. Based on J.K. Rowling’s iconic Harry Potter book series, the show has stirred controversy due to Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues.
Notably, Rowling has faced criticism for her public statements on gender and sex, with her support for individuals opposing transgender rights sparking backlash. Despite the author’s involvement, the Harry Potter franchise has faced scrutiny, including a recent partnership with Tim Hortons that drew negative attention.
Director Kate Herron also shared her decision to decline involvement in the Harry Potter series, echoing Pankiw’s refusal. Herron, known for directing Loki and other popular series, expressed solidarity with Pankiw’s stance. While inquiries to Warner Bros. Discovery regarding production challenges remain unanswered, Pankiw’s representative has yet to provide further insights on the text exchange.
