“Robin Williams’ Children Revive Father’s Instagram Against AI”

Robin Williams’ children have decided to reactivate their late father’s Instagram account due to the increasing presence of unauthorized AI representations of him. Williams passed away on August 11, 2014, at 63 years old, with an autopsy revealing he had Lewy body dementia.

In their recent post on Monday, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their intention for the “therobinwilliams” Instagram account to serve as a secure platform where genuine stories, photos, videos, and memories can uphold their father’s legacy with sincerity and compassion. This marks the first activity on the account since July 31, 2014.

The trio aims to share their father’s exceptional talent and humor with the world, encapsulating the moments that brought laughter to many while honoring his remarkable life and contributions. Williams had a prosperous career spanning film, television, and stage, gaining fame through projects like the television series “Mork & Mindy” (1978-82) and films such as “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), and “Jumanji” (1995).

Notably, he received an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in “Good Will Hunting” (1997) and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin” (1992). Recently, AI-generated videos of Williams have emerged online, showcasing him in various scenarios, including podcasts, stand-up comedy acts, motivational speeches, and even commenting on dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.”

These videos were primarily produced using OpenAI’s Sora app, which was discontinued in March following backlash from family estates over the misuse of public figures’ likenesses. Zelda Williams, an actor and director herself, has strongly opposed AI recreations of her father, urging fans to refrain from sending her such content, as it goes against what her father would have endorsed.

In light of this, she mentioned on Instagram that the revival of her father’s Instagram account is part of their strategy to combat the misuse of AI technology. While some, like actor Matthew Lawrence, who co-starred with Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” expressed interest in leveraging AI to preserve Williams’ iconic voice, they emphasized the importance of obtaining consent from the family before proceeding with such projects.

Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has also condemned the unauthorized use of her father’s likeness in AI applications. Notably, an AI version of late actor Val Kilmer, who passed away last year at 65, will appear in the upcoming film “As Deep As the Grave,” with his estate granting permission for his digital representation and receiving compensation.
