“Yellow Alert Issued for Strong Winds in Niagara Region”

Environment Canada issued a yellow alert on Friday morning for Niagara and Haldimand-Norfolk, cautioning about strong winds in the region including Hamilton, Brantford, and Burlington.

The yellow alert is the least severe of the three color-coded alerts issued by the weather agency, progressing from yellow to orange and then red as the level of risk escalates.

In the early hours of Friday, Environment Canada issued the yellow alert specifically for communities along the Lake Erie shoreline. The weather authority highlighted the potential for winds with gusts reaching 90 km/h and possibly exceeding 100 km/h in those areas, expected to commence in the morning and subside by late afternoon or early evening.

According to the agency, showers and the possibility of thunderstorms were forecasted to move into the region in the morning, followed by a cold front sweeping through in the afternoon. This cold front may bring about another round of strong winds with gusts of up to 90 km/h and potentially surpassing 100 km/h along the Lake Erie shore in Niagara.

Environment Canada cautioned that damage to roofs, fences, tree branches, and other structures is conceivable, with potential property damage and a risk of injury from airborne or falling debris. Additionally, Hamilton, Brantford, and Burlington are under a special weather statement affecting a majority of southern Ontario, warning of morning thunderstorms and wind gusts reaching approximately 70 to 80 km/h.
