Ye, the artist previously known as Kanye West, has decided to delay his upcoming performance in Marseille after French authorities indicated their intention to prohibit the concert. This decision by Ye comes shortly after he was barred from entering the United Kingdom, where he was set to headline the Wireless Festival in July, due to backlash surrounding his history of making antisemitic comments.
In a statement posted on the social platform X, Ye expressed that postponing the Marseille show was a personal choice, stating, “After careful consideration, I have chosen to postpone my Marseille, France show until further notice. I understand that it will take time to demonstrate the sincerity of my efforts to make amends.”
Originally scheduled to take place on June 11 at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome, the concert faced opposition from French authorities. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had vowed to explore all options to prevent the show from proceeding as planned.
Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan had also voiced his disapproval of Ye’s visit to Marseille, a city with a rich history of multiculturalism and immigration. Payan stated, “I will not allow Marseille to become a platform for individuals who promote hatred and overt Nazism. Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our symbol of community and a sanctuary for all Marseillais.”
Ye has received widespread criticism for his antisemitic statements and expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler. He faced backlash for releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” and promoting a swastika T-shirt for sale on his website. Australian authorities revoked Ye’s visa in July following the release of the controversial single.
In an effort to address the controversy, the 48-year-old artist issued a public apology in January through a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal. Ye attributed his behavior to his bipolar disorder, describing a manic episode that led to destructive actions.
In his most recent communication on X, Ye emphasized his accountability for his actions while expressing his desire not to involve his fans in the controversy. He affirmed his appreciation for his supporters and expressed anticipation for future performances, concluding with, “Looking forward to the next shows. See you at the top of the globe.”
