A Vermont farmer was surprised when one of her sheep gave birth to sextuplets. Teemu, a finnsheep at Clover and Bee Farm in Underhill, Vt., delivered the six lambs, which was unexpected as the farmer, Anne O’Connor, was anticipating twins. Sextuplets are incredibly rare in sheep, with only a few instances reported globally.
O’Connor recounted the moment she noticed Teemu going into labor, hearing the distinct sounds sheep make when communicating with their newborns. As the lambs started arriving, O’Connor had to assist in cleaning and ensuring the newborns could breathe properly. Despite the unexpected number of lambs, all six were successfully delivered.
The lambs, named after the Finnish numbers one through six, have brought joy to the farm, especially during a challenging time as O’Connor battles breast cancer. The births serve as a reminder of the resilience and hope that life continues amidst difficulties. An expert suggested that the unusual sextuplet birth could be due to a genetic mutation influencing ovulation, leading to multiple lambs from a single ewe.
