“U.S. Justice Department Overhauls Gun Regulations”

The U.S. Justice Department made significant changes to gun regulations on Wednesday, aligning with the views of Second Amendment supporters within President Donald Trump’s base. This move was met with criticism from gun control advocates following a recent incident where an individual armed with weapons attempted violence at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Among the 30+ revisions announced, one key change involves the proposed elimination of a 2024 Biden administration rule. This rule aimed to mandate additional background checks by firearms dealers at gun shows and other non-storefront locations to close the so-called “gun show loophole” allowing unlicensed sellers to bypass background checks.

Opponents of the rule, including gun rights organizations and Republican-led states, had challenged its legality, arguing it infringed on Second Amendment rights and exceeded President Biden’s authority. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche described these revisions as the most extensive regulatory reform in the history of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Blanche emphasized that these changes aim to uphold Supreme Court precedent while reducing unnecessary burdens on gun sellers and lawful owners.

In response, gun control groups criticized the revisions, accusing the administration of prioritizing the interests of gun rights advocates over public safety. The changes were implemented around the confirmation of Robert Cekada as the new head of the ATF, marking a significant development in the agency’s leadership.

Despite historical tensions between conservatives and the ATF over gun regulations, the agency’s role in combating illegal firearms and violent crime has been highlighted by the Justice Department. Acting Attorney General Blanche expressed confidence in Cekada’s ability to lead the ATF effectively in this critical period.
