The memo highlighted that Rideau Cottage’s location near the Governor General’s residence and the surrounding residential area heightens security risks. Additionally, the memo pointed out that the building’s limited space and lack of functional areas do not meet the requirements of a prime minister. Previous prime ministers have been hesitant to invest the substantial funds needed to renovate the 19th-century Sussex Drive property or construct a new official residence.
A confidential source mentioned that a decision regarding the fate of 24 Sussex could be made in the upcoming months. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper was the last to reside at 24 Sussex, which has undergone decommissioning in recent years to address issues like mold, asbestos, and rodent infestation.
The National Capital Commission oversaw the removal of outdated mechanical, heating, and electrical systems from the property. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau set a deadline of January 1, 2026, to establish an advisory panel to provide recommendations on the location, functionality, cost, and security needs of the official residence.
The Privy Council Office has taken a more active role in examining options and estimating associated costs. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has submitted security recommendations to the government for each potential option. The RCMP has emphasized enhancing security through measures such as environmental design, bollards, surveillance systems, and counter-drone technologies.
Various options are being considered for the replacement of the prime minister’s official residence, including a renovated complex at 24 Sussex Drive, a move to another property in Rockcliffe Park, or an upgrade to Rideau Cottage.
