A recent incident involving a SpaceX rocket colliding with the moon has been captured by a South Korean satellite. The satellite images revealed a visible mark on the lunar surface near the Einstein Crater where the SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage made an unintended crash landing. The Korean lunar orbiter Danuri, equipped with a high-resolution Lunar Terrain Imager (LUTI) camera, documented the event before and after the impact.
The SpaceX rocket’s second stage, launched in January 2025, had been off-course for a year after deploying two lunar landers. Traveling at an estimated speed of 8,700 km/hour, the rocket stage crashed onto the moon on Wednesday in a highly anticipated but unintentional event. The resulting debris plume was observed from Earth through telescopes, confirming the impact even before the satellite images were released.
Danuri, launched in 2022 aboard a SpaceX rocket, has been orbiting around 100 kilometers above the moon’s poles since December of that year. Originally planned for a one-year mission, its operational life has now been extended until 2027. The incident has sparked discussions about the responsibility of space agencies in managing space debris, especially from commercial space missions.
