Sony Pictures announced that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” set a new North American opening weekend record, surpassing “Avengers: Endgame” with $360 million US in ticket sales from theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Initially projected to earn $355 million US, the film performed even better in its debut weekend across 4,487 theaters, edging past the previous record set by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.
Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in breaking records, highlighting the significance of achieving this milestone. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” joins the ranks of blockbuster films that have made history in the domestic box office, surpassing the $300 million US mark. Previous record holders included “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” In 2021, amid the pandemic, the third installment of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series, “No Way Home,” achieved a $260 million US debut and went on to earn $1.9 billion US globally.
The successful weekend for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” featuring shared cast members Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, contributed to a record-breaking weekend for movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Overall, the domestic box office has seen a significant increase of over 15 percent compared to the previous year, totaling more than $6.2 billion US in ticket sales to date.
