Due to an overnight storm that brought over 40 cm of snow and winds exceeding 100 km/hr, students in the Avalon and central regions of Newfoundland will experience delays in getting to school on Tuesday. The aftermath of the storm left streets filled with high snow mounds at the end of driveways, creating a challenging morning for residents.
Schools in the Avalon area are opening three hours later, while those in the central zone are delayed by two hours. The previous day, schools remained closed as whiteout conditions persisted throughout the morning.
Provincial government offices are also delayed in opening until 10:30, with exceptions for notified employees. St. John’s courts will start at 10:30 a.m., and Memorial University will resume classes at 1 p.m. after opening its campuses at noon. However, the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus will remain closed for the day due to ongoing snow clearing.
Newfoundland Power worked diligently overnight to address power outages that affected around 8,000 customers in the Avalon Peninsula. By morning, the number of impacted customers decreased to 800, further reducing to 500 by 8:30 a.m. Glenda Power, a spokesperson for the utility company, mentioned that their teams were well-prepared for the anticipated weather conditions, with crews addressing various issues like cracked poles and blown fuses in transformers.
Additionally, there were reports of flashing lights near power lines on Monday night, often a result of blown fuses or arcing caused by heavy snow and ice. Power emphasized that such occurrences might not always indicate a serious problem but advised contacting the company in case of an electrical emergency.
