“Social Media Influencer Andrew Tate Charged with Trafficking Minors and Money Laundering”

Romanian authorities have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and tampering with witnesses. His brother Tristan has also been charged with complicity in the crimes. The Tate siblings, who are former kickboxers holding dual U.S. and British citizenship, were apprehended in Miami following a extradition request from Britain.

Having primarily resided in Romania since 2017, the brothers have been the subject of a criminal investigation in the country since December 2022, with allegations including human trafficking. Despite the accusations, they have consistently denied any wrongdoing. According to Romanian prosecutors, the Tates enticed their victims through deceitful means, feigning romantic interest or marriage before coercing them into creating explicit content for a webcam enterprise.

Eugen Vidineac, a Romanian lawyer representing the Tates, asserted that they would thoroughly scrutinize the indictment and challenge any shortcomings in evidence, procedure, or legality through the appropriate legal channels. The accused individuals maintain their innocence against the charges leveled against them.

The Tate brothers are currently detained in the U.S. while awaiting a decision on their extradition to the U.K., where they face rape allegations. The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecuting unit DIICOT, responsible for investigating the Tates, has not confirmed whether they will pursue extradition from the United States.

In Romania, the Tates can be prosecuted in absentia; however, proceedings will not commence immediately. Per Romanian law, the indictment will be reviewed by a preliminary court chamber judge to ensure legal compliance, a process that typically extends beyond the mandated 60-day period. The brothers were previously indicted in Romania for human trafficking, but the case was remanded back to prosecutors by the Bucharest court of appeals in late 2024 due to the exclusion of certain evidence.

One victim of Andrew Tate was reportedly 15 when he initiated contact in the U.K. in 2012 before relocating her to Bucharest and exploiting her through coercion and intimidation to produce explicit content for social media platforms. Tristan was allegedly complicit in the exploitation, using physical force against the victim. Prosecutors stated that the brothers withheld $1.25 million US of the victim’s videochat earnings, constituting approximately 80% of her total income, and attempted to launder the money by purchasing luxury vehicles.

Andrew Tate, who has openly expressed misogynistic views, had previously mentioned relocating to Romania due to perceived leniency in law enforcement. The brothers have cultivated a following, primarily among young men, by projecting a lavish, hyper-masculine image focused on fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
