Brock’s Madalyn Weinert and TMU’s Aaron Rhooms were crowned as the top U Sports basketball players this week. Weinert, a veteran guard/forward from Brock, clinched the Nan Copp Award after an outstanding season where she led in points per game (24.1), overall points (530), and field goals made (196). Weinert also showcased her defensive prowess by topping the charts with 14.4 rebounds per game.
On the other hand, Rhooms, a fifth-year guard from TMU, received the prestigious Mike Moser Memorial Trophy, becoming the first player from his university to earn this accolade. Rhooms ranked third nationally in scoring with an average of 22.0 points per game, boasting a 50% shooting accuracy from the field on 376 attempts. He notably achieved three games with over 30 points during the season.
Rhooms’ stellar performance propelled his team to the top seed for the playoffs. They wrapped up the regular season with a remarkable five-game winning streak, securing a first-round bye and home-court advantage. This success led to a Wilson Cup triumph and a spot in the U Sports Final 8 tournament.
The women’s Final 8 tournament will kick off in Quebec City on Thursday, while the men’s competition will commence in Calgary on Friday. Fans can catch all the action live on CBC Sports.
