Earth-grazers, meteors that penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere before returning to space, are expected to be particularly captivating this year. Meteor expert Peter Brown suggests heading out early to catch these bright grazers, with visibility starting as early as 10 p.m.
The Perseids are projected to peak around midnight Eastern Daylight Time, potentially offering up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal viewing conditions. While not all meteors may be visible, the increased rate enhances the likelihood of spotting a dozen or more bright streaks early in the evening.
The Perseid shower began on July 17, with meteor sightings intensifying as the peak approaches. Weather forecasts should be monitored for optimal viewing opportunities, and the night before the peak is often highlighted for its brighter meteors.
To maximize meteor sightings, clear skies and minimal light pollution are essential. Observers are advised to avoid using their phones to aid their eyes in adjusting to the darkness. The radiant point of the Perseids, located in the Perseus constellation, serves as the shower’s focal point but meteors can streak across the entire sky.
Aside from the Perseids, other meteor showers like the southern delta Aquariids, alpha Capricornids, and kappa Cygnids are also active, contributing to what experts describe as “meteor Christmas.” Additionally, a partial solar eclipse on Aug. 12 will be visible in parts of Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal, offering a unique celestial event for spectators. Safety precautions, including the use of approved solar eclipse glasses, are emphasized for eclipse viewing.
