The Ottawa Charge currently hold a playoff position in the Professional Women’s Hockey League with less than half of the season remaining. However, their upcoming six consecutive away games raise uncertainties about maintaining their position.
Ottawa, with a record of 5-5-1-7, has struggled to secure a road victory in regulation this season, emphasizing the need to simplify their playing style, according to players. Forward Alexa Vasko highlighted the importance of team unity, incremental progress, and emotional balance to navigate challenges.
The team faces a challenging schedule ahead, starting with matches in New York, Vancouver, and Minnesota before participating in Takeover Tour games in Winnipeg and Calgary, with a stop in Seattle in between. Their return to Ottawa for a game against the Montreal Victoire on April 3, to be held at the Canadian Tire Centre, presents another test for the Charge, who have a 0-1 record at the NHL’s Senators’ home venue.
Coach Carla MacLeod acknowledged the demanding road trips but emphasized the team’s focus on making the best of the situation and capitalizing on road game opportunities. The Charge have encountered difficulties this season, often surrendering leads or failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leading to missed points that could impact their playoff chances.
In a recent game against the Seattle Torrent, the Charge experienced a familiar scenario of losing a lead but managed to secure a 4-3 victory with a late power-play goal from Fanuza Kadirova. Kadirova, a rookie from Russia, has been gradually adapting to the league and showcased her scoring prowess, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
Additionally, defender Kathryn Reilly, who returned to hockey after pursuing medical studies, made an impact by providing crucial assists in the game. Reilly’s unselfish play, exemplified by passing up a scoring opportunity to set up a goal for teammate Emily Clark, reflects the team’s camaraderie and leadership dynamics on the ice.
The Charge’s resilience in overcoming challenges and the emerging contributions of players like Kadirova and Reilly underscore their determination to solidify their playoff position in the competitive league.
