The recent 18 months have been a whirlwind for Hayden and Charity Franson, filled with adventures and new experiences. Hayden, a former basketball player at Cornell University, was looking to continue his basketball journey after graduating. With offers from various schools in the U.S., fate led them to the University of Calgary in Canada.
Introduced to the head coach of the Calgary Dinos, Dan Vanhooren, through a family friend, Hayden’s skills caught the coach’s attention. Following a visit to the campus last April, the Fransons felt a strong connection to the university and the city. They were offered a scholarship and accommodation, with a unique living arrangement with Bill Hurley, the team’s equipment manager.
Living with Bill has been an adventure for the Fransons. The routine-oriented Hurley adds a touch of fun with his pranks and love for Nerf gun wars and UNO games. Despite the adjustments from NCAA to FIBA rules for Hayden, their time in Calgary has been more than just about basketball. The friendship and life lessons learned from living with Bill have been invaluable for the couple.
As they prepare for the U Sports Final 8 and the Dinos’ quest for a national championship, the Fransons reflect on their journey from Idaho, Utah, and New York to Calgary. Embracing the unknown, they appreciate the adventure and the impact Bill Hurley has had on their lives, teaching them to cherish each moment and find joy in every situation.
