An Indigenous community from the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, situated on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, has recently acquired a two-story commercial building in Edmonton’s Ice District. The community plans to expand the building by adding 35 stories of residential units.
During a press conference, Chief Tim Ominika announced the completion of the commercial real estate purchase of the Connect Centre in downtown Edmonton. The building, developed by Katz Group Real Estate and One Properties, was constructed over two years and became operational in 2022 before being listed for sale in September.
The Wiikwemkoong community secured the center for $65 million, with Chief Ominika expressing intentions to reinvest the financial gains into future community developments, including healthcare systems, transportation, and housing for both on-reserve and off-reserve members.
Commending the community’s investment, Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack highlighted the city’s commitment to economic reconciliation and the welcoming environment for such initiatives. The planned expansion of the Connect Centre aligns with Edmonton’s downtown revitalization efforts, aiming to enhance the vibrancy and safety of the city’s core.
The Connect Centre’s air rights have been stratified, allowing for the construction of additional floors for residential and commercial purposes, contributing to downtown Edmonton’s vitality. Knack emphasized the importance of increasing foot traffic in the area, a goal supported by the city’s extension of the downtown revitalization levy.
The Wiikwemkoong community’s acquisition of the Connect Centre reflects a step towards financial self-sustainability, providing an opportunity for revenue generation through the building’s existing commercial tenants. This investment marks the community’s first venture outside of Ontario and underscores Chief Ominika’s encouragement for other First Nations groups to explore similar investment prospects beyond their traditional territories.
