Femke Kok claimed the gold medal in the 500m speed skating event at the Milan-Cortina Olympics as expected by many. She continued her unbeaten streak in the sport by setting an Olympic record and beating her Dutch teammate, Jutta Leerdam, who settled for silver. Erin Jackson, the defending champion, finished behind Kok and Leerdam.
Kok expressed her determination to prove herself by securing the gold, emphasizing that it was her main goal. She dominated the final stretch of the race, finishing in 36.49 seconds, leaving Leerdam trailing by a significant 0.66 seconds.
Noteworthy sports analyst Anastasia Bucsis praised Kok and Leerdam for their exceptional performances in sprint speed skating. Miho Takagi of Japan clinched the third spot, while Canadian skaters Béatrice Lamarche, Brooklyn McDougall, and Carolina Hiller-Donnelly finished in the top positions.
Jackson, the first Black American woman to win an individual gold at the Winter Games in 2022, finished fifth in the 500m event. Despite a strong start, she faced challenges during the race, allowing Kok to secure her victory.
Kok’s dominance in the 500m event has been evident for the past two years, with her latest achievement adding to her impressive record. The Dutch skater prevented Leerdam from achieving a rare double win in the 500m and 1,000m events at the same Olympics.
Leerdam, who excelled in the women’s 1,000m race, highlighted the mutual respect and healthy competition between her and Kok. Lamarche’s strong performance in the 1,000m event showcased her skill and composure on the ice, earning praise from experts for her consistent form throughout the season.
