“Cineplex Considers Sale with New CEO Appointment”

Cineplex has disclosed a potential sale consideration in a recent announcement appointing Bill Walker, former head of Landmark Cinemas, as its new CEO. The company’s board, while expressing confidence in its future, stated that it is exploring various options to enhance shareholder value. A strategic review has been initiated to assess opportunities for maximizing value, including the possibility of selling the company. Co-financial advisers Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been enlisted for this review.

Cineplex, known as Canada’s largest cinema chain, operates over 1,600 movie screens in nearly 170 theaters countrywide, with a workforce exceeding 10,000 in its entertainment establishments. The company was previously on the market in 2019, with a proposed $2.8 billion acquisition by the U.K.-based Cineworld Group PLC which ultimately did not materialize.

Former CEO Ellis Jacob will be offering advisory support to the board during the strategic review process. Chair of Cineplex’s board, Phyllis Yaffe, emphasized the company’s strong market position and leading entertainment assets, indicating that the current market valuation may not fully reflect its business strength and long-term potential.

Walker, who successfully led Landmark Cinemas and oversaw its acquisition by Kinepolis in 2017, expressed support for the strategic review. He emphasized his commitment to operational excellence, exceptional guest experiences, and delivering superior outcomes for shareholders regardless of the review’s outcome.
