The leader of a downtown Kentville business group in Nova Scotia expressed a shift in perspective on homelessness in the area, noting ongoing safety concerns among residents. A public gathering at the Kentville Fire Hall drew nearly 300 attendees, who engaged with a panel of experts discussing public safety and the role of the community’s resource center for individuals facing homelessness.
Paul Dixon, the President of the Downtown Kentville Business Association, highlighted the importance of gaining accurate information to dispel misconceptions and frustrations within the community. The purpose of the meeting was to inform residents about current efforts addressing homelessness in Kentville and the broader province, as well as to foster dialogue and feedback from the public.
The panel featured representatives from various organizations, including Nova Scotia Health, Kentville Police Service, the Department of Opportunities and Social Development, and the Open Arms Resource Centre, which manages the local shelter. Dixon, who also manages property, shared his transformation from anger over property damage to appreciation for the work being done by the resource center.
Leanne Jennings, the Executive Director of Open Arms Resource Centre, detailed the center’s services and success in transitioning shelter users to permanent housing, often relocating individuals outside of Kentville. Ruth Wright, owner of Bloom Box neighboring one of the shelters, emphasized the importance of treating homeless individuals with dignity and collaboration rather than alienation.
Addressing public safety concerns, attendees at the meeting raised apprehensions about individuals with severe mental illness and addiction issues who may pose risks to the community. Kent Reade, Deputy Chief of Kentville Police, differentiated between feeling unsafe and uncomfortable, noting an uptick in service calls without a corresponding increase in serious crimes.
The event encouraged interaction through written feedback on sticky notes under specific themes, facilitating an open discussion on safety, policy, and health and wellness. Concerns were voiced regarding the need for comprehensive support for vulnerable individuals to enhance overall community safety.
The engagement underscored the community’s commitment to addressing homelessness and fostering a collaborative approach to ensure the well-being of all residents in Kentville.
